A Chapter of the American Association of Woodturner’s

May 2015

Meeting Notice:
Our next meeting will be held on: May 9th, 2015 at 9:00am
We meet the second Saturday of each month in the woodshop of the Harding School in
Coos Bay. The Harding Building is located below Marshfield High School on 7th Street.
Parking is behind the building near the football/track field. Enter the workshop through
the door on at the NW corner of the building. Look for our sign on 7th street and near
the door to the classroom.
Members, Guests and Prospective members are welcome and encouraged to attend. Meetings
begin at 9am and include a club raffle, show and tell, woodturning demo and regular club
business. Coffee is also provided. Sometimes there are even cookies  (Hint Hint)
See Jim T’s note below about ideas for this month’s program.
Ikes Corner:
Just a reminder that there is an added afternoon session following the regularly
scheduled May 9th South Coast Woodturners morning meeting. The afternoon session
will begin at 1:00 p.m. in the Harding School shop. I will be the instructor covering the
steps in creating a bottle stopper. It is my plan to have the lathes out so people can go
home with a bottle stopper. The wood will be provided and the stopper inserts will be
available for a cost of about $4.
Make sure you plan a trip to the Coos Art Museum to view the display of our groups’
projects and the great work of the members of the South Coast Woodworkers. A big
Thank You to the Woodworkers for inviting us Woodturners to join in the display.
In spite of the rapid growth of the grass and weeds, I trust you are finding time for the
lathe. We all grow our skills by making chips on the lathe.

Jim’s Program Notes:
May Program
Because of a family emergency we had to cancel the presentation on the yarn spindle.
Our program will be a problem solving program where members can bring in their
questions and techniques options they wish to have discussed. As of this time the topics
to be discussed will be as follows:
1 – Green wood to turning stock.
2 – Using a scrapper to finish the bottom of a bowl.
3 – What size of equipment should a new turner purchase and what preferences are
helpful in making these decisions?
4 – Dust prevention / collection methods. New topics can still be added.
It would be helpful to hear from you as soon as possible.
